A UNESCO-listed fortified town
Founded in 1092 by the Count of Cerdanya to lock the way into the Conflent, Villefranche-de-Conflent has kept its fortified enclosure intact, strengthened by Vauban from 1669 for Louis XIV. Its ramparts are part of the Vauban fortifications network, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, alongside Fort Libéria which overlooks the town — reached by a staircase of several hundred steps or by an underground path.
The starting point of the Yellow Train
The legendary Yellow Train, symbol of the Catalan country, sets off from Villefranche-de-Conflent and has climbed since 1910 towards the high plateaus of the Cerdanya over more than 60 km of track, with dizzying bridges and viaducts. The town is also among the Most Beautiful Villages of France.
Medieval lanes and nearby caves
Inside the ramparts, cobbled lanes, craftsmen's workshops and medieval façades are best discovered on foot. Close by, the Grottes des Canalettes offer another side of the Conflent, between built heritage and natural curiosities.
