The cherry capital
Céret proudly maintains its title of cherry capital — the first cherries in France, traditionally sent as a first-of-the-season gift to the Élysée. In spring, the orchards in blossom and then the harvest bring the town to life, along with the Saturday market and the local cherry festival.
The Mecca of Cubism
In 1911, Picasso and Braque set up their easels in Céret, invited by their friends Manolo, Frank Burty Haviland and Déodat de Séverac. More than three hundred works were created there between 1911 and 1913, earning the town its nickname "the Mecca of Cubism". The Museum of Modern Art, housed in a former 17th-century convent, today holds works by Picasso, Chagall, Miró, Soutine and Juan Gris.
