The Obelisk, a monument unique in France
On the port's royal square stands the Obelisk, 33 metres of pink marble from Villefranche-de-Conflent and white marble from Estagel, erected in 1780 by the king's architect Charles de Wailly. It is the only monument in France raised in honour of Louis XVI during his lifetime — four bronze bas-reliefs celebrate American independence, the abolition of serfdom, freedom of trade and the French navy. Listed as a historic monument since 1920, it is a stop of a few minutes not to be missed if your journey takes you to the port.
